The Samsung Galaxy A51 is a 6.5" phone with a 1080x2400p resolution display. Otherwise, the sluggish performance makes the experience too frustrating to use as a daily driver. But it is an unavoidable reminder this is not a top-end phone, and general performance belongs to the class below. We’d already made the change before taking the photos seen in this review. Like most 48MP phone sensors, it takes 12MP images and uses pixel binning to improve image quality. I got about four and a half hours of screen-on time on this device. With most titles you get an experience fairly close to that of a more expensive phone, which is a sweet consolation after the general performance hitches. Camera The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a great display but is severely hindered by sluggish performance. All of these results are good, suggesting any shortfall in battery is not down to the display. A lower price comes with obvious downgrades from Samsung's pricier phones. Treble is a little abrasive maxed-out and we'd ideally like a stereo array, though. While I normally like hole punch cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which makes it much more obvious than it would be without the ring. You don't get a reliable view of the shot you take in the camera app. The phone is smooth but not slippery, and fairly light at just 158g. A lack of a good preview image is common in cheaper phones. While this shot does not have the most natural look, you can see how hard the HDR processing works, bringing out the blue of the sky between the foliage. While it's pricier than the 4G version, it's not too expensive as 5G phones go. Battery life The result? The lag factor is worth considering if you plan to buy the Samsung Galaxy A51 outright as a way to save money on expensive contracts, after years on the high-end Android upgrade treadmill. A macro lens lets you take new approaches to photography. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it forces you to notice it even when the display is off. On our first attempt a 90-minute video took just 6% off the charge level: an excellent result. You might be better off using the pin unlock or even the 2D face unlock option for speed and accuracy. At that price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering with the phone. There’s an optical in-display fingerprint reader on the Galaxy A51. It’s still plastic after all, though I didn’t mind it nearly as much as the plastic on other phones in this price range. A nice even exposure, plenty of cloud detail. With a quad cam, including a 48MP main camera, you'll want to post every pic you take. There's significantly more lag here, apps take longer to load, and there are some pauses we were a little surprised to see in a phone at the price. We miss a proper zoom camera. It’s not quite bright enough to let you watch movies in direct sunlight comfortably, but the interface and web pages look fairly clear. This means it looks very similar to a Galaxy S20. The bottom part has a pinstripe texture of thin lines, for example, sitting under the top plastic layer. And with the long-lasting and fast-charging 4,500mAh battery, you'll have the power you need to keep doing your favorite things. And if you’re willing to spend more but not $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features of the full-fledged Galaxy S20 for $699 before trade-in. Try the macro mode. Its optional Vivid screen mode looks very saturated, and contrast in a dark room is clearly far better than LCD phones at the price. There’s also no way to switch between wide and ultra-wide views as you shoot, a neat form of on-the-fly editing available in other phones. However, while the build quality and screen are also great, the sub-par performance of this phone is its Achilles heel.
